Do an Advanced Driving Course
Start a Quote Now!
Quite a few car insurance companies give additional discounts when you have completed an Advanced Driving Course. There are big variations in price so it is well worth shopping around if you are thinking about embarking on such a course. At the time of writing they are approximately €50 per hour.
As well as generating a discount on your car insurance, you will also be learning a valuable life skill that will remain with you throughout your life.
Type of Car – choose carefully
The type of car you drive can have a big influence on the cost of your car insurance. Influencing factors include the value of the car, the size of the engine and the BHP or the amount of power than an engine can generate. Generally the higher the BHP (brake horsepower) the more powerful the engine - the faster it can ultimately travel and accelerate. More powerful engines are more expensive to insure. Other common measures of car power are PS (metric horsepower), KW(kilowatt) and Torque.
If you are thinking of changing your car, you are probably looking around at different options. When you have narrowed your options to a handful of different cars, please give us a call and we’ll give you the cost to insure each of the cars. It would be very helpful if you have the registration number for each of the vehicles – that way we can be absolutely certain that the correct model has been input into the quotation system.
Add an additional driver
For drivers under 40 years of age, adding a Mum, Granny, Aunt etc. will very often generate an additional discount.
Telling us about your spouse and their driving habits
If you have a spouse who has their own car, please do tell us - with their permission of course. In addition to needing to know their date of birth and licence type, we will also need to know details of their car (the registration will suffice) and car insurance policy. By adding this information to our quotation engine, discounts will automatically be generated with three insurance companies.
Mileage- keep it low
If your mileage is very low, then tell us - because there are discounts to be had. The bands are below 5,000 km per year, between 8,000 and 5,000 per year and between 12,000 and 8,000 per year.
Increase your Policy Excess
Some insurance companies allow a discount for taking an increased excess. An excess is the amount of a claim that you undertake to be personally responsible for . Typically the standard excess is €300. Once all of your details are input into our quotation system (whether you are online , talking to us on the phone or in person) it’s very easy to adjust the excess amounts and get a revised quote. That way you can be fully informed before you go ahead with your new car insurance policy.
The policy excess will not apply to any windscreen claim or third party liability claim. The policy excess will only apply to an ‘own damage’ claim. That means damage caused to your own, insured car.
Tell us the Issue date of your Driving Licence
At the back of your driving licence is the date that it was first issued. Inputting this date into our quotation system will drive a discount with two insurance companies.
Age of your car will make a difference
Older cars are more expensive to insure. The main reason for this is because parts can become difficult and more expensive to source. Another reason is that statistically, insurance companies report that older vehicles are not as safe as newer vehicles and therefore claims can be more frequent and expensive.
